We Find Why It Failed
Most gate problems start at the hinge post or a frame that’s out of square. We check both before touching the hardware.

Posts Reset to Carry the Load
A leaning hinge post gets reset or replaced in concrete, deeper and a size up, so the gate has something solid to hang from.
-
Frames Squared and Braced
Braces run the right way, anti-sag cables are tensioned, and wide wood gates can be rebuilt on a steel frame.
-

Diagnose
Common Gate Problems and Their Fixes
The symptom tells you where to look. This is what we usually find, and what we do about it.
| Symptom | Usual cause | Our fix |
|---|---|---|
| Latch side drops and drags | Leaning or rotted hinge post, or a racked frame | Reset or replace the post; square and brace the frame |
| Won’t latch, only in some seasons | Clay soil moving posts; wood swelling | Reset posts deeper; adjust the latch gap |
| Gate swings open on its own | Out of plumb hinge post or a weak latch | Plumb the post; fit a self-latching latch |
| Hinges pulled loose | Screws in soft or rotted wood; hinges too light | New wood or a steel frame; heavy-duty hinges with through-bolts |
| Double gates don’t meet | Sagging leaves; no center stop or drop rod | Re-hang and level both leaves; add a stop and drop rod |
| Automatic gate stops or reverses | Misaligned sensors, low battery, binding gate | Free the gate, align sensors, service power and settings |
If the frame is rotted or the gate keeps failing after repairs, we’ll quote a replacement alongside the repair.

Questions
Gate Repair FAQ — Norman, OK
Why does my wood gate sag?
Usually for one of three reasons: the hinge post is leaning or rotting, so the whole gate tips; the gate frame has racked out of square because it has no brace or the brace runs the wrong way; or the hinges and screws have worked loose. Wide wood gates are heavy for their frame, which is why we often rebuild them on a steel frame.
Which way should the diagonal brace on a gate go?
A wood brace should run from the bottom corner on the hinge side up to the top corner on the latch side, so it pushes the latch side up. A steel cable or anti-sag kit does the opposite: it runs from the top hinge corner down to the bottom latch corner and pulls the latch side up. A brace installed the wrong way does nothing to stop a sag.
Can a sagging gate be fixed without replacing it?
Often, yes. If the frame is sound, we can square it up, add a brace or an anti-sag cable with a turnbuckle, and fit heavier hinges. If the hinge post is the problem, we reset or replace it in concrete. Replacement makes sense when the frame is rotted or the gate is too heavy for its design.
Why does my gate latch fine in winter but not in summer?
Norman's clay soil swells when it's wet and shrinks when it's dry, so gate posts can shift a little with the seasons, and wood gates swell in humid weather. A gap that lines up in January can bind in August. Resetting the posts deeper and leaving the right gap at the latch usually solves it.
Can you repair automatic gate openers?
Yes, for many common problems: gates that won't open or close all the way, stop and reverse for no reason, drift or run slowly. Causes include worn batteries, a weak solar charge, misaligned safety sensors, limit settings and a gate that binds. We fix the gate itself first, because an opener can't make up for bad hinges or a sagging frame.
My pool gate doesn't close on its own. Is that urgent?
Yes. A pool gate that doesn't close and latch by itself doesn't meet Norman's pool barrier rules and leaves the pool open to children. It's usually a quick fix: hinge tension, latch alignment or a post that moved. Keep the gate closed by hand and call us.
When should a gate be replaced instead of repaired?
When the frame is rotted or cracked, the gate has been patched several times and still sags, or a wide wood gate was never built to carry its own weight. A new gate on a welded steel frame with a properly sized post usually ends the problem for good.
